"I only remember seeing my great-grandfather once. I must have been about 2 or 3 years old, and he and my grandfather were sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee. I stuck my head around the corner for a peek and listened, they were speaking in Polish. What I saw were two old men that appeared to be nearly the same age. Later, my mom would explain to me he was Grandma's dad and that the two men at the table were a generation apart.
My only other knowledge of my great-grandfather came through the stories my dad told around the dinner table. They painted a picture of a gentle God-centered man that loved nature and animals. Like so many others of that time, he worked his way over on freighters to earn enough money to bring his family to the United States. He mined coal in Pennsylvania and later, bought a farm in Abrams, Wis. where he farmed until the age of 85.
All of the stories that I heard over the years were told with an admiration and respect that spoke of a humble greatness and my great-grandfather, a man I had seen only once, became a hero to me."
